Making Of / 31 January 2024

Introduction and Overview:

Welcome to the January devblog for Mischievous Martians. Throughout this month we have been working on a few pieces of the project and would love to share our progress with you. Below we will discuss a few areas that we have been working on including scene creation, character creation and animation block outs.

Animation:

Camera animation has begun! We have begun the first stage of the animation journey with blocking in the camera movements in our first scene in the spaceship. It is still in early stages however we look forward to sharing more details of this in the next devblog.

Modelling and Scene Creation:
The final interior of the ship is complete and ready for animation, we have begun work on the Martian environments including some complex cave systems, the cave systems are being worked on using 3D sculpting techniques along side box modelling.

Character Creation:
In this edition of the devblog we would like to share with you an early version of the astronaut base model that we will be using in animation blocking, this model is 50% complete and will be further refined for the final animation.

Mischievous Martians: December Devblog

Making Of / 19 December 2023

Introduction and Overview
Welcome to the first of the Mischievous Martians devblogs, we would like to share our progress with you through the coming year as we make this project come to life, you can expect to see teasers and work in progress images in these devblogs in addition to an insight into how we are making this short animated film.

We are working hard on Mischievous Martians in December with multiple aspects of production commencing at the start of the month. We have finished the pre-visualisation stage of the project and awaiting a script rewrite to better incorporate the mechanics of the story telling. We have begun modelling the first few scenes of the animation and begun work on shaders to use throughout the animation.

Animation:
Currently animation work is in the very early stages and we will continue working on this throughout the year, ramping up the intensity when we have the scenes fully fleshed out. We would like to share a test animation with you below that shows the astronaut's spaceship descending down onto the surface of mars.

Materials and Shading:

We have created a half-tone toon shader for use in the animation as a 'base' coat for every object and character, it is optimised to work within the EEVEE render engine.

Modelling and Scene Creation:
We have begun the creation of a detailed interior for the spaceship and a few exterior scenes that will feature in the opening sequence of the animation. The interior of the spaceship is about 90% complete and is awaiting final polish and shading whereas the exterior shots are around 50% complete. Throughout the next month we will be moving onto creating a detailed Martian village and cave scene that will be the grounds for most of the animation.

In Closing:
Thank you for reading this devblog and following this production, we look forward to sharing more work with you all in the future.
